How to Use the Online Waveform Editor
Upload an audio file and a full waveform will be rendered in the editor canvas. Click and drag on the waveform to select a region — the selected area is highlighted. Once a region is selected, you can apply any of the following editing operations:
- Cut — Removes the selected region from the audio entirely, joining the surrounding audio seamlessly.
- Silence — Replaces the selected region with silence, keeping the total duration intact (useful for muting a section).
- Fade In — Applies a linear fade-in to the selected region (volume ramps from 0 to 100%).
- Fade Out — Applies a linear fade-out to the selected region (volume ramps from 100% to 0%).
- Normalize — Peak-normalizes the selected region so its loudest sample hits 0 dBFS.
- Gain — Boosts or cuts the volume of the selected region by a specified number of decibels.
Every operation is undoable. Use Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z to undo and Ctrl+Y / Cmd+Shift+Z to redo. When you are satisfied with the result, export to WAV, MP3, or OGG.
When to Use the Waveform Editor vs the Audio Trimmer
- Use the Audio Trimmer for simple start/end cuts when you want to keep one continuous middle section.
- Use the Waveform Editor when you need to remove a section from the middle, apply fades, mute a region, or make multiple operations with undo support.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many undo steps are supported?
The editor stores up to 50 undo steps. Each step is a full snapshot of the audio buffer, so undo/redo is instantaneous.
Can I use keyboard shortcuts?
Ctrl+Z (or Cmd+Z on Mac) undoes the last operation. Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+Shift+Z (Cmd+Shift+Z on Mac) redoes it. Shortcuts work anywhere on the page as long as focus is not in a text input.
What editing operations are available?
Cut, Silence, Fade In, Fade Out, Normalize (peak), and Gain adjustment. All operations apply to the currently selected waveform region.
Can I zoom in on the waveform?
The waveform renders the full file. For very long recordings, select a small region by dragging on the waveform — your selection is shown with timestamps so you can work precisely.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. All editing happens in your browser's memory using the Web Audio API. Your audio never leaves your device.
